The Secret is.... I'm controversial!

I have been reading the book, "The Secret." It's been amazing what I have been able to "manifest" into my life by using some of the concepts contained therein. I have read other books before about the power of positive thinking, but this one has proven to work more powerfully in my life. Since I have been reading the book I have been able to bring some exciting things into my life with my thoughts.
Ham and mustard
I was reading a book about a poor, young, teenage girl who lived in a decrepit castle with her family. A neighbor gave them ham and mustard for a Christmas meal. It was the best meal they had had in months. When I read that I thought, "Ham and mustard, that sounds good."
A week later, we went to dinner at a friend's house. What did they serve?! You guessed it! Ham and mustard!
Member of an Advisory Board
I recently recieved an e-mail from an up and coming on-line clothing store I purchase from. They asked me to be on their Advisory Board for a new clothing line! In return, free clothes! Woot! Thank you, Universe! When I told my sister, Fashionista, about it she said, "How did they know you were opinionated?" I don't know. I guess I just "manifested" it. Oh yeah!
Made national news
I wrote, what turned out to be, an edgy post for the Mile High Mamas blog. My post was picked up by an associate producer at She called me and asked me to do a follow-up for an article she was writing.
I am super excited about having made national headlines. But, my mom is all upset at some of the comments I have been receiving. Apparently, my quotes have made me, in the eyes of some, a "disgrace to the human race."
How does Kathy Griffin's mom deal with her daughter being controversial? Kathy always jokes about her mother and her boxes of wine. I guess it's too bad my mother doesn't drink.
And for my next manifestation...
Seeing how applying certain principles from "The Secret" has brought some exciting things into my life. I decided to test the waters even further. I put on a water-skiing vest and threw open my front door and yelled for the Universe to hear,
"I want a boat!"
Apparently, the Law of Attraction went a little off kilter, because I noticed a new boat in my neighbors driveway instead of my own.
Maybe in need to "manifest" a little harder.

  1. enjoyed the post. started this book and thought hmmm. . . o.k. And then when I realized that all those victims of tragedies
were merely not listening to the universe I found something else to read.

  2. Spin- That part for me was a little tough to take, too.

  3. Man! I guess I need to read the Secret. I think I am the only one that hasn't. But if it will get me ham and mustard I am allll over it!

  4. Love your spoof... as I see it The Secret is the latest and by far the worst example of a HIGHLY profitable trend where self-help gurus with fabricated new age titles and little relevant education, credentials or legitimate expertise brainwash us into believing that they know what is best for us, our marriages and our families.

Often their only contribution to society is introducing some exotic sounding, new age philosophy. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements.

The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act... this is the definition of a cult.

The solution is a return to our (common) senses! The best way out of this learned “self-helplessness” is to go cold turkey. Stop following ALL self-help gurus now. Begin, instead, to reclaim your natural, God-given ability to think for yourself. The common sense that was once readily available to all of us is still there free of charge and waiting to be applied to just about any challenge we might face in life… all you have to do is use it.

Please, let's all work together to stop the flock of "sheepeople" who blindly move from one UNPROVEN concept to the next, looking for the answers to life's challenges that you already possess and that is the OBVIOUS!

  5. Criticism is one of the prices of fame...if I wrote a post saying I was a little leary of male teachers, I would not hear anything about it...I could probably even get away with an outright bashing...because I am NOT famous.

  6. Wasn't this an Oprah book? Oprah is the perpetuator of all that is EVIL and WRONG with this society.

(just kidding - I'm sure she's very nice)

So really, the reason I'm not swimming in trillion-dollar bills is I just haven't thought hard enough about it yet. Hmmmm. I thought it had more to do with having 18 kids and one income and a hubby in a public service occupation.

    Silly me.

  7. *not that there's anything wrong with that

  8. I think The Secret is mostly crap. And you know I'm not a fan of Oprah.
I enjoyed the post, I like how you (as always) did the right thing.
I am absolutely dumbfounded by the Ham and Mustard Miracle!

  9. So I wonder why that lady on Deal or no Deal didn't win the million dollars on Monday night? She was putting it out there to the Universe that she was going to win and said that she wrote herself a check for a million. What did she do wrong?

  10. Haha! Famous and funny. Love your new picture.

Hope your boat shows up! When it does, can I go for a ride?

  11. It's no secret--we love Annie!

I enjoyed your article. I also love the embellishments on your avatar--made me laugh!

Keep us posted on the boat. If I visit Colorado some day, I want to go water-skiing!

  12. I would tell them all to suck it as per our previous discussion about Kathy Griffin. (months ago, sorry if you don't remember.)

  13. That's cool that you made a national news outlet.

Now you know how Michelle Obama feels.

"For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country."

"What's a young, single dude doing teaching fourth grade anyway?"

Without the full text of what you said, it does sound bad.

But don't worry Internet fame or infamy only lasts 7.5 minutes, not the full 15!

    MJ in GJ

  14. hooray for the law of attraction. i don't understand why people don't believe it. what you put out there comes back to you. why would you NOT want good things to come into your life? duh. sorry about the boat thing. he he.

  15. You crack me up! I love visiting your blog!

  16. HAHAHA!
Oh Annie, clearly you are a disgrace to womankind, most sentient beings, and perhaps the entire worldwide web!

YAY!!! You are famous! But I always knew that. That's awesome.

Hey, and you forgot to mention how posting a picture of Cindy got you in hot water ;)

  17. I am projecting an image of you wearing a tiara, in your boat, swimming in a sea of money (like Uncle McDuck)

  18. Be careful what you wish for... we bought a boat last spring and it's been nothing but a money pit! We do have fun with it, but it costs a pretty penny to keep, maintain, gas up, etc.!

  19. There are two happy days in a boat owner's life: The day she buys her boat, and the day she sells her boat.

  20. I love ham, but I hate mustard.

    Am I alone?

  21. Hey Annie, why does Cindy McCain have a cast on her arm? I noticed it during today's veep announcement. I thought you'd have the inside scoop.

  22. I guess you're famous now, but perhaps not in the way you intended to be! There are people with really strong opinions and I thought you handled it all very gracefully!

  23. John Curtis has some issues.

    John- I'm $85 and hour.

I use the Secret with my clients because I want them thinking sobriety. We practice saying I am sober. I have been sober for 5 years; 10 years; etc.

Does it work for everything? Probably not. But anything that gets others thinking positively is a good thing. The drama and sensationalism of the book and movie I could do without. But I'm weird that way.

  24. What is the difference between going to RS and getting little magnet with a good scripture on it and hanging that on your fridge, and The Secret?
And I think John Curtis has good sense.

  25. I am going to have to try this out. I am going to try and manifest some ice cream into my freezer since tomorrow is Sunday and I can't go shopping for it.

I see you sitting there. Leave a comment.
