And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII will always love youuuuuuuuuuuuuu

It's been 31 days since I have quit my dear friend, Diet Coke, cold turkey. I white knuckled it for the first week and a half. It seemed to get a little easier after that. They say it takes 28 days to change a habit. I very nearly fell of the wagon on Day 28. We went to Fiesta Guadalahoochies for lunch and I wanted to throw back a soda with my chips and salsa and Picadillo Burrito like there was no maƱana, but Secret Agent Man pulled me back from the ledge, i.e. staged an intervention, prying my death grip off the icy glass and away from my quivering lips. I have decided to quit caffeine and carbonation altogether in an effort to make healthier choices. Since I am not buying so much soda, I have more money in my pocket: Upgrade. But, I have replaced my Diet Coke with fruit juices, therefore I am drinking some of my calories: Downgrade. As certain as I am that I have done a good thing, I will miss my D.C. ::Tear::

  1. Good for you! You're strong...you can do it! In fact, you're so strong, you can do it for me, too! I'll drink enough for the both of us so you don't have to 'cause that's just the kind of blogging friend I am.

  2. If I can do it so can you. I am close to the one year mark!! I did have a one day slip earlier this summer, but other than that, it's been easier than I thought--although I only gave up DP, not caffeine. I do drink diet cream soda.
I really like crystal light pomegranate flavor.

  4. I love my Diet Coke too... one day I'll have the guts to give it up! My favorite low-cal non-carbonated drink is Walmart brand Crystal Light. Super cheap and the Fruit Punch flavor is the BEST!

  7. Does Cindy McCain drink Diet Coke?

  8. I guess you are going to have to give up Mexican Food too. It's not even worth eating without the fuzzy stuff to slurp it down.

I'm so proud of you for resisting.

  9. Stay strong, sister. I recently gave up all dark-colored sodas because the phosphoric acid is sooooo bad for women's bones. (Listen up, ladies! No more Diet Coke for any of you if you don't want to be breaking hips when you're sixty!) It's hard. So hard. I need a Dr. Pepper ...

  12. Annie,
I was a diet pepsi aholic....for YEARS !!! easily drinking a 2 liter bottle of the stuff daily... My neurologist told me I better stop !!!! Well, easier said than done, however it's been well over 2 years now - I'm a 'recovering diet pepsi aholica now"... When I do have one (once every 6 months or so), it doesn't even taste that good to me anymore.. Don't dispair... soon, you won't crave it anymore, and when you do break down and indulge, you won't have the same taste for it.
    Hang in there.

  13. I quit my coca-cola habit (the real thing, not that whimpy diet stuff) about six years ago, and it's one of the best health decisions I've ever made.

My legs were always aching in the evening while I was drinking the junk, and I was always kind of jittery. No more.

I've found that the best thirst quencher in the world is (ta da!) plain old water. You're lucky because you live in a place that has pretty decent tap water. Take advantage of it.

Keep at it and good luck! You won't regret it.

  18. I guess we need to start a DC-aholics anonymous program... Hi I'm PK and I've been clean for 3 years now. I quit cold turkey and never looked back...ok maybe I did...twice but those times I sorely regretted it as I got ill from drinking it again... ick!

  20. Inspirational! I may have to think about picking a date to kick the D.C. habit! Why is it people who drink this stuff are addicted to it? Makes one wonder!

  21. No Diet Coke here. Yuck. I have dramatically reduced my soda intake. But I prefer the real deal. I have tried the Crystal Light stuff myself. Except I feel like I'm drinking Kool-Aid. Do I have a red mustache?

  22. I live in "Mormonville" where caffeine free DC is readily available. That takes care of the caffeine part... now to take care of the carbonation part...? Hmmm... how about buying a can, opening it and putting it in the fridge overnight? Voila!! No more bubbles.

Okay, I get it... no soda. You're stronger than I am. Take me to Sonic between the hours of 2 & 4pm and I can get it 1/2 price with a shot of vanilla....YUMMY!

  23. De-lurking, although, I've de-lurked a few times before. I just don't comment regularly. Anyway, I'm Tori's sister. Congrats to you. I have gone off Diet DP for the most part. I don't buy it anymore, but I would have had to have one with the chips and salsa. You are a strong, strong woman.

  24. my husband thinks blogs are lame....then he took a sneak peek at yours while sitting next to me and thought this post was pretty funny...he has a slight Coke addiction, particulartly McD's 42 oz.-ers. Then he became even more infatuated when he saw your Bush/McCain poll on your sidebar. We think you're pretty clever!

  25. You are a stronger woman than I. There is no way DC and I could part. I envy you for being able to walk away...

  26. I gave up diet soda months ago...oh, such sadness! But what I'm REALLY pining away for is a Coke Icee! :(

I'm forcing myself to drink water.
